Updated: Dec 14, 2018

The direct English translation for Hygge is fun. Yes, Hyggelig is all about fun filled life. Hygge (hooga) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. As a cultural category with its sets of associated practices hygge has more or less the same meanings in Danish and Norwegian, but the notion is more central in Denmark than Norway.

Hygge life

Hygge very much implies a feeling of authenticity, warmth and togetherness.

Hygge in other Languages

Danes are not the only one who can enjoy the atmosphere, comfort and pleasure that comes from being in good company, in front of the fire, with some mulled wine. While an English translation of 'hygge' into cosiness may be problematic, as it loses lot of important associations, we can find a variety of concepts more similar to hygge around the world and they are called by different names.

  • Gezelligheid - The Netherlands

  • Koselig - Norway

  • Hominess - Canada

  • Gemutlichkeit - Germany
